What I’m Reading Now- Autumn 2024

by Robin Turnipseed

I can hardly believe how quickly this year is passing by—it’s as if time is racing ahead of me. Each week blurs by in the blink of an eye, and just when I finish packing away our pool toys and beach supplies, I find myself heading back into the garage to pull out the Christmas tree. As I sit here reflecting, I realize that Thanksgiving is just over a week away, and the holiday spirit is beginning to creep in. I’m making a conscious effort to slow down the whirlwind of my thoughts and set aside a few evenings to enjoy a steaming cup of tea while getting lost in a good book.

Recently, I’ve discovered a few cozy and charming books to add to my autumn reading list that are perfect for anyone who loves a good Hallmark movie. One of these gems might be your ideal choice if you’re searching for your next literary adventure.

Book 1: Mixed Signals by Liz Curtis Higgs

If you’re in the mood for a heartwarming read that captures the essence of a Hallmark movie, Liz Curtis Higgs’ novel Mixed Signals is a delightful choice. With its engaging characters and charming storyline, this book offers a perfect escape into romance and friendship. In her book, the story follows Belle O’Brien, a spirited on-air radio personality. Belle’s career turns unexpectedly when her Chicago-based radio station is sold and transformed into an all-sports network. Consequently, the changes lead Belle to the small town of Abingdon, where she helps to establish a new startup radio station with a smooth-talking boss and a mysterious and brooding engineer.

Will Belle rise to the challenge of the unknown, or will she revel in the unexpected twists that lie ahead? Dive in to discover her journey!

Book 2: The Bookshop on the Corner by Jenny Colgan

When Nina Redmond leaves her job as a big-city librarian, she decides to take a leap of faith and pursue her dream of owning and operating a mobile bookshop. However, she never expected this dream to lead her to a quiet village hidden in the Scottish Highlands, where the locals hesitate to welcome newcomers. Initially, with their distinct personalities, the villagers seem determined to keep her at a distance, causing Nina to question her every decision.

Nina feels daunted as she tries to create a new life in this tight-knit community. However, through her talent for playing literary matchmaker, her unwavering kindness toward a grumpy landlord, and her ability to tolerate even the noisiest of neighbors, she begins to win over the entire town Until one day, Nina turns around and realizes that she is not just welcome here; she has become one of their own.

Book 3: As You Wish: Inconceivable Tales from the Making of The Princess Bride by Cary Elwes

I remember the first time I watched The Princess Bride when I was ten. It was unlike any movie I had seen before and still is. It had everything: a strong-willed princess, the perfect villain, a dashing pirate suitor, and Billy Crystal as Miracle Max—definitely my favorite part! Years after watching the movie, I read William Goldman’s novel, which inspired the film and solidified my love for everything related to The Princess Bride. So, when Cary Elwes released his memoir, As You Wish: Inconceivable Tales from the Making of The Princess Bride, I eagerly purchased it purely out of nostalgia. I also bought the audiobook version because Cary Elwes narrates it.

Who wouldn’t want Prince Wesley to read a book to them?

The audiobook features passages narrated by director Rob Reiner and additional comments and interviews from cast members such as Billy Crystal and Robin Wright, who portrayed Buttercup. If you opt for the hardback edition, you’ll find beautiful behind-the-scenes photographs included, making it an excellent holiday gift choice.

Let Me Know What You Think

If you choose a book from this list or any of my lists, I’d love to hear your thoughts! Also, what are you currently reading?
