Our Top 3 Recommendations for Your Fall Reading

Oh, summer, you little sneak! You fooled me this year. You saw me construct all my elaborate plans. You looked on and chuckled as I daydreamed of myself sitting poolside reading in between answering the endless calls of “Mom, watch this! Mom, can I have money for the snack shack? and “Mom, please get Josie’s mom’s phone number so we can facetime and have endless playdates.” Ok, so even in my daydreams, my reading wasn’t uninterrupted, but still, they contained reading.

Summer, you knew that your days would quickly fill with football practices and reading and math tutoring and that any free moments between field day and meet the teacher day would be scarce. However, school is back in session, and I am taking back the reigns.

Creating a Classic Movie Night

At the beginning of each summer, we sit down as a family and create a list of fun activities for us all to enjoy. Pool time, baseball games, a beach trip, and copious amounts of ice cream are the usual contenders for top priority. After creating the list, we go around the table, and each person gets a chance to choose which activity they would like to help coordinate.

My daughter’s chosen adventure this year was to take us all to camp. She attended a day camp last summer and wanted us all to enjoy a similar experience. However, certain obstacles thwarted her plans, such as finding enough time in a schedule already laden with football practice and math tutoring. Not to mention the challenge of finding a day camp that accepted middle-aged parents. That being said I knew that creating a magical night at home may be the way to go this year.

The Fluted Bowl

Growing up, my family moved quite a bit. I lived in the midwest for most of my childhood and then spent my teenage years moving throughout parts of Alabama and Mississippi and settling in east Tennessee. While moving provides adventure, finding solid friendships becomes more challenging with each new location. It was not until college that I had the opportunity to dig deep roots.

Thankfully, I firmly planted myself in Chattanooga, TN, and spent four years at the same school, which helped me develop a tight-knit circle of friends. Like most college kids, we became family: eating every meal, attending every event, and spending every weekend together. Throughout the years, our parents would cycle through for short visits or attend events, and we would show up for the obligatory introductions or have a quick meal with them all in the dining hall. However, some of the other parents represented a bit more in my inner circle. One of my closest friends, Trisha, had those parents.
