The Copper Pots

“It’s a perfect day,” Kristi Bubrig says as we walk side by side on the gravel driveway. “It is amazingly wonderful,” I agree. It is early September when I meet up with Kristi. Our local area is experiencing what we southerners call “false fall.” “False fall” appears in late August and early September bringing in cooler temperatures and enough wind to blow the still-green leaves off all the trees. Try as it may, we know not to breathe a genuine sigh of relief until mid-October; however, we do deeply savor the breeze. I eagerly trail behind Kristi as we head toward one of her properties. I have been to this space before and am eager to return to gather the entire backstory.

Our Top 3 Recommendations for Your Winter Reading

The clock nears midnight as I sit at my dining room table, listening to the neighbor’s chihuahua barking next door. The dog is outside on its last bathroom break, and I can tell the wind scares him. To be honest, his own shadow often frightens him, launching him into fits of hysteria. The yaps, which usually frustrate me, keep me company tonight as I create my goal list for the upcoming year. I glance down at my paper and see the words “Read More Books” taking up the first spot on the page. So, far this is my only priority.

“Mom, chocolate is always a better idea,” my daughter calls over her shoulder as she pulls the can of cocoa powder from the back of my pantry.

“Wait. I thought that you wanted to make a gingerbread house?” I say this in a delicate tone, knowing that any intonation in my voice can tip the conversation towards an all-or-nothing scenario. I am currently dealing with a tween fueled by pure sugar and a combination of Christmas delight and expectation. I can sense that a meltdown may be imminent.
